I think stuff is just a burden because half of the stuff people have they store away in storage places. Why don't they just either get rid of it or give it to people that will actually use it.
I think that in the world today that we do have a lot of things and it has become a lifestyle. Its like this is how we grew up and we have never learned another way. So we just automatically think that we need bigger and better things than everyone else.
We do live in an age of abundance but that is just how we know it. For us now it would be really hard to live without these things, like cell phones and tvs. I don’t really think that we understand how much of an age of abundance that we live in just because it is all we know.
Olivia- that is a good question. What do you guys think? Is it better to be right brained or left brained? Or is Pink advocating for something different?
To answer Olivia’s question, I think that is equally important to be left brained or right brained. Like Mr. Pink said, both are equally important, they are just different. The world needs all kinds of people with all kinds of different talents.
Rose- I do think that people feel more secure when they have more stuff because the feel like they are important enought to have all of that stuff that others don't have.
Olivia, that's an interesting question. Before AWNM I would say it doesn't matter, but now I think it does. Being left brained is super important for certain jobs involving logics and science and math. But being right brained seems like it's becoming more useful, with some jobs. Artists, actors, and many other jobs are needed right brained people. So, I think it's important to have both brains and use them, but I think, as of now, being right brained is better.
In response to your question Olivia I honestly think that you can't survive without either one. It's essential to have both because one is not better than the other, they work differently but are equal. You need both to function and do whatever you choose to pursue in life.
Moritz-Our clothes show who we are and we always try to impress others. I think that our world is very materialistic and we need the approval of others just to feel good and have people like us.
Mikenna- I dont think its possible for this to change unless something drastic happens.
People arent willing to change because they like having their stuff and the amount of stuff shows how well you are doing. For example, in the renaissance times or around then if you were fat that was a good thing because it meant you had enough money to make you fat.
It depends complelty upon your security in yourself with your dress because either you really don't care what others think or your trying to impress someone.
Erin, in response to your comment on Olivia's question, don't we still need both kind of people in our society today? Even as far as we are, the world is full of endless things to discover, and not all of those things can be discovered by artistic people.
This is Kelsie now... I had to wear a uniform at my old school and I feel the same as Delaney. People always complained about wearing certain clothes and not being able to express induviduality. People wanted to be able to wear what they wanted and when we were given that chance people sometimes took it too far and did not abide by the dress code.
Olivia, your little comparison made me laugh, but it's also true.
Jennifer, well I didn't say it's not important to not have a left brain but I'm just going with the title too, and from what I've read in the book about right brainers. It is still important to have both, but like Matt said, if those jobs can be replaced by computers, then right brainers might really be the new thing in the future.
If you want to pursue a job with left brian needs than could'nt you live in another counrty and do your job?? The thing about this book that really bothers me is that it's center anf focused on Americans
Why discuss how we could reduce the amount of abundance in America, when it is helping contribute to the Conceptual Age that Daniel Pink talks about. We speak of abundance as a bad thing, and maybe in some ways it is, but if it leads to a new right brained future, why do we look for ways to try to solve issues with abundance? Am I completely missing the point of this discussion? It seems like we’re still just agreeing that we live in an age of abundance and not talking about the implications of the abundance. Rather than saying why we live in an age of abundance or why nobody wants to fix it, why not talk about how abundance will ultimately affect the future of America? Actually, maybe I'm posting this a bit late, as most of the posts are not about fixing abundance anymore. But I'd still like to move to how abundance will affect America, and other countries also?
Olivia- Do you think there is anything we can do to help push society along in turning away from stuff and possesions? I beleive it is hard to change society but if we can change ourselves; we can lead by example and show others we don't need to always focus on material things.
I feel that it doesn't matter which side of the brain is more important. Really, you need both sides of your brain just like Mr. Pink said in his book. The left side concentrates on the text as the right brain concentrates on the context of the text. Without one of those sides you may not completely understand something to the fullest. Yes, the right brain in the future may be used more, but the left brain still is important in life.
Kelsey-In response to your question, I believe that people should be able to have an equal amount of right brain and left brain because a balance of those two completely opposite qualities of you could make you really successful in life.
Erin- I agree with you and Matt about computers taking over the world in the future and the need for right-brainers more so than now, but then there would not be a job for any left-brainers in the future and that rules out a lot of people who cannot make a living just because they have a different way of thinking.
I dont think that it really matters what job people choose to do as long as they are doing what is pleasing to them. What do you think? Do you think that it is more important to go to work for the money or to go to work so that you can enjoy what you are doing?
I agree with you kinda matt. Abundance always isn't bad. BUt it depends how you live your life i believe. If your still helping other, and living a green life than that's ok. But I think it's not bad to have a lot of things like clothes, because I could have clothes from a year ago that i still wear or whatever, so i don't think that's a bad thing
Rose- I do think that some people just want to be seen as right brainers so that they can convince other people that they will be able to be successful in the future.
Mikenna-I think it all start with one person. Sort of like paying it forward if one person shows others how much we dont need extra material things. So let it start with you, or me and eventually it will go around. It just depends on who wants to listen.
Matthew G- We completely agree with what you have to say. We sometimes tend to start talking about one side of a situation and ignore or forget the other side. Thank you for bringing your brilliant input to this discussion and we completely agree!! From Kelsie and Mikenna
Rose, that was a really good question. And I have to admit, when taking the right/left brained test, I wanted to be more right brained. I had no preference or anything before we started reading AWNM, but after reading it and discussing it, I wanted to be more right brained. Maybe because left brained people are more logical and better at math and science, and I don't like either of those subjects very well, and they aren't my strongest. When I found out I was more right brained I was happy, but I'm not 100% sure why.
When measuring the right side it becomes a lot more subjective due to the fact that it is a grey area. Also, when doing a college interview you never really get to know the student in an hour. This leads to first apperences like what you wear causeing abundunce.
I think it is true that colleges don't just want smart people with A's or what not...but they want interesting almost it seems right-brainers that have special talents.
A good point made in the inner circle is that colleges are more and more interested in the personality of the students. College is not the final step, college is just preparing us for life. So do tests really determine what kind of person you're going to be in the real world, or do they just determine how well you will learn? And what do the tests score mean? Do they mean that you will or will not be successful in the world?
Matt G- In answer to your post i think you are very right. Abundance is not a totally bad thing for America it just makes me wish we could help out the people in 3rd world countries that dont live in abundance. I would willingly give up all my exrta items if I knew I could help those people. Would you? If we could live in a little less abundance mabye we could help the rest of the world out instead of just America.
Do you think that most people think that abundance and excess are the same thing? While I may have 30 shirts or whatever, what if I wear them all? That wouldn't be excess because there's nothing that's not being used. However, it's abundance because 30 shirts are definitely more than you need. Do you think that there is a difference between abundance and excess?
If only 4 to 10 percent of our IQ accounts for our career success then what is the point of learning and memorizing all of these facts that we learn in school, what is the importance of it?
Kelsie L- According to Mr. Pink right brainers are going to be used more in the future. So in that case artists, teachers, designers, and jobs like that will probably be more accepted. But on the other hand there's a job out there for everyone even if you're more left brain. Anyways if I were Mr. Pink and how he says that right brainers will rule the future then, I think the characteristics that will be used more would be creativity, and all those traits that go along with with jobs he mentions..... if I just made any sense at all
Rose-- This is Kelsie. I'm a little late responding but I think you asked a great question. When I took the brain question I thought I would be more left brained because I can't draw and I'm not very good at artsy stuff. I was surprised when I turned out to be more right brained. I think people want to be more right brained because that is what this book promotes, we just need to keep in mind we are just discovering ourselves. Great question by the way!
Matt- You bring up a good point. Excess is different yet similar to abundance. You are right. What bugs me is that people buy things they will never wear. There is no way to stop abundance or excess but there are ways to help those without either.
Kelsey- I think that we learn all this stuff in school so that we have as many options open for us when we grow up. I think the point is that we need to be well rounded people in the world today so that we may become all that we want to, and school helps us with that.
Colleges are also looking for the kids who have extra-curriculars not just the kids who have good grades. So is it more important to have the grades or have the extra-curriculars?
Meaning has truly become the new definition of sucess. Instead of struggling to stay alive, people in America are struggling to truly live. I believe meaning can be found in all things. Living a meaningful life is a choice not an achievment. Through everyday experiances we can make the world better and learn about life.
I forgot to say that I think you should work at a place you want to work at. Live the way that you've always wanted to. Who cares if it's a right or left brain activity. :) oh and alyssa, yeah i knew this stuff too!!!!!!!!
I like what Catherine said about money. So if the world had no money, would we be better off and not have to worry about getting jobs and support for our lives? Money kind of seems like the problem that is keeping us from doing what we really want.
Truthfully, I'd be so happy if i Was a ski bum!!! Cause I'd be happy, and my life would be purposefully, because I"ve already found a lot in my life, and i've realized that friends and being with people i like being around is very meaningful, and that's how i'm happy. And I'm happy when i ski :]
i think because right-brainers are supposed to be creative and imaginative and musical and all that, people would rather think that's what they want people to see, not the smart, logical person

What if even through Asia, Automation and Abundance, right-brained people and the jobs that represent them never become mainstream, so to speak. What if left-brained people still hold the foremost position in the job market?
Olivia-I totally agree with you because I know people who go out and buy a shirt that is like $60 but you can find the same shirt for at least half the price, they would rather buy the shirt that is $60 just because it is designer. I think that this is kind of dumb that people do this and I think that it is because of how the world has formed us.
Lisa-- I agree. Meaning is very important in our lives. You are right, people in America don't struggle to survive, we struggle to find meaning and purpose in life.
In the inner circle,i think in order to get the job, you need to not only love the occupation, but you need to have the drive to get the job you love to do. the world is a very compeditive place
I've realized aftering spending time in other countries, that they work to live, where as Americans usually live to work. Like when someone is 3 years old, you could probably ask them what job they want when they grow up, and they would respond immediately. Because I don't believe that little kids are just dreaming of being accountants when they grow up. Where as I think people should teach their kids to grow up, and be happy and live a meaningful life, however that happens for them.
Alyssa~ Of course I want to be a dancer! :) I've done dancing my whole life and I can't even imagine quiting. But, there are other things I want to do besides dancing cause those have been my dreams too. Still though, if I did those I wouldn't quit dancing cause I'm too addicted!!! I love it too much!!! To answer your question in one word, YES!!!
We are drawing a drastic line between right and left brained people. No one is black and white and to judge someone's perspective on life depending on how their brain functions is overly critical. Without all types of thinking, the world would not work and there would be no meaning in life.
Kaylyn, that was a really good point you made. Right now, I sorta want to be a teacher. The pay is low, but I think it'd be fun, and I love working with kids. Maybe as I get older though, I'll choose something that I don't love, but the pay is better. I don't want that to happen, but since I'm only almost 15, my job idea can really change.
Does anybody else have something like me, like wanting to be something even if the pay is little?
Also, Asians get paid less for doing the same things as people do here, because over in Asia less is more. The people who get paid what we consider less are actually considered the middle to upper class of their societies.
I think people are never satisfied with what they have and that is why there is so much abundance. For example I have eight pairs of jeans when I really only need two or three pairs, I just always want one more pair.
To answer Olivia's question I think being right and left brained is important. There needs to be a balance of creativity and logic. Being left brained is important but being right brained is becoming more useful than in the past.
Responding to Rose's question, I think people do feel more secure when they have more because it distracts them from what they may not want to deal with.

I do think we live in a world of abundance, because we have so many things in our country.
Catherine, that's an interesting quote, and it definetly proves we live in a world of abundance.
Delaney, I agree with what you said too because electronics, food, and other items are everywhere, and it is hard to avoid them.
Do you think people feel more secure when they have more?
To Olivia- how do you think this can be changed? Why do you think no one is willing to change?
Caryn- I think that some people try to recycle and help the world but not enough people do that to make a big enough impact.
Olivia- that is a good question. What do you guys think? Is it better to be right brained or left brained? Or is Pink advocating for something different?

Hi it's Holly Bishop. since my computer is bumb, im on catherine's blogger.
I think that you need the left side of your brain just as much as you need the right side of the brain. the left side isn't obsolete.
Olivia- I think that is an excellent point. We have to change ourselves first if we want the world to follow.
Rose, that was a really good question. And I have to admit, when taking the right/left brained test, I wanted to be more right brained. Is it just me?? or have some people already realized this sort of stuff before reading this???
When measuring the right side it becomes a lot more subjective due to the fact that it is a grey area.

With all this college and having a good job, i think that the right brain has a big part, because to do all of that, you need social skills usually

Holly. Good point jennifer. I believes that schools are looking for creativity and logic at the same time.
Kenna- Just Wondering.... do you want to be some sort of Dancer when you get older? haha sorry
Rose-- This is Kelsie. I'm a little late responding but I think you asked a great question. When I took the brain question I thought I would be more left brained because I can't draw and I'm not very good at artsy stuff. I was surprised when I turned out to be more right brained. Kenna-- This is Kelsie. I might make myself sound really stupid for a second here, but what did I ask that you were commenting on?
EVERYBODY LOOK AT LISA'S COMMENT ON MEANING!!! I agree with her 100%.
Lets talk about Asia. Why do asians get paid us? How can we change this?
Although Pink has made his point and completely convinced me that right brainers will have a foremost place in the future, I'd like to ask a question that I found myself thinking about. What if even through Asia, Automation and Abundance, right-brained people and the jobs that represent them never become mainstream, so to speak. What if left-brained people still hold the foremost position in the job market?
I believe meaning is going after a dreams. Each person has different dreams wich set them apart and give them individual characteristics.
Olivia-I totally agree with you because I know people who go out and buy a shirt that is like $60 but you can find the same shirt for at least half the price, they would rather buy the shirt that is $60 just because it is designer. Lisa-- I agree. Meaning is very important in our lives. You are right, people in America don't struggle to survive, we struggle to find meaning and purpose in life.
Correction: Why do asians get paid less than us for doing more or an equal amount of work we do here in america?
Olivia is Asia outsourcing something we should change?
In the inner circle,i think in order to get the job, you need to not only love the occupation, but you need to have the drive to get the job you love to do. the world is a very compeditive place
I've realized aftering spending time in other countries, that they work to live, where as Americans usually live to work. Like when someone is 3 years old, you could probably ask them what job they want when they grow up, and they would respond immediately. Because I don't believe that little kids are just dreaming of being accountants when they grow up. Where as I think people should teach their kids to grow up, and be happy and live a meaningful life, however that happens for them.

To answer your question in one word, YES!!!
Olivia- You're still looking at the Asia, Automation, and Abundance as a bad thing. Should we change outsourcing?
We are drawing a drastic line between right and left brained people. No one is black and white and to judge someone's perspective on life depending on how their brain functions is overly critical. Without all types of thinking, the world would not work and there would be no meaning in life.
That's good to hear Kenna hehehe
Kaylyn, that was a really good point you made. Right now, I sorta want to be a teacher. The pay is low, but I think it'd be fun, and I love working with kids. Maybe as I get older though, I'll choose something that I don't love, but the pay is better. I don't want that to happen, but since I'm only almost 15, my job idea can really change.
Does anybody else have something like me, like wanting to be something even if the pay is little?
children in other countries don't have the freedoms or job chooses that we do in america. their parent might choose their job for them
Also, Asians get paid less for doing the same things as people do here, because over in Asia less is more. The people who get paid what we consider less are actually considered the middle to upper class of their societies.
Kelsie- To answer your question on if I remember what you asked me, I don't even remember now what you asked haha
Catherine- Yes I think so because I believe all people were created equal and should get equal pay for the work they do and the things they accomplish
Kelsi- Thank you for agreeing with me. I think its a big probelm taht peopl are so superificial
Erin- I know what you mean. I want to be a teacher also... so to answer your question, yes.
